India and Pakistan shared with each other the list of their nuclear installations on Wednesday, January 1. A nuclear installation is a place where nuclear weapons are kept. This tradition has been going on under an agreement since 1991. India and Pakistan exchanged the list through diplomatic channels in New Delhi and Islamabad.
Along with this, India and Pakistan also gave information to each other about prisoners and fishermen. These lists are shared every year on January 1 and July 1 under the Bilateral Agreement on Consular Access signed in 2008.
An agreement was signed between the two countries on 31 December 1988. It was decided in the agreement that India and Pakistan would share the list of their nuclear establishments with each other on January 1 every year. It was also decided that both the countries would not attack each other’s nuclear facilities.
This agreement came into force on 27 January 1991. For the first time on January 1, 1992, both the countries shared this information. Since then this information is shared every year on January 1. This was the 34th time the information was shared.
