India will likely host the top javelin throw event in September this year in which several star players, including Olympic gold and silver medalist Neeraj Chopra, will participate, the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) said on Tuesday. This event is in addition to the many competitions that India has expressed interest in hosting. This also includes the World Championship to be held in 2029.
Outgoing AFI President Adil Sumariwala confirmed that India has expressed interest in hosting the 2029 World Championships and the World Relays event in 2027. The AFI has already expressed its interest to host the 2028 World Junior Championships during the visit of World Athletics President Sebastian Coe to India in November last year.
Sumariwala, who has been president of AFI for the last 12 years, said on the first day of the sports federation’s annual general meeting, “India will host a top javelin throw competition later this year in which the world’s top 10 players will participate.” ‘
He said, “Neeraj Chopra will be there. He is part of the team that will organize this competition. JSW, a foreign firm and AFI are jointly preparing for this competition.
In many countries, it is common for athletes to contribute to global events to boost the popularity of a particular sport. Neeraj has consistently advocated hosting international events in India to raise the level of athletics in the country. Sumariwala later told PTI that the competition could be held in September.
