The Income Tax Department has released the Excel Utility version of ITR-1 and ITR-4 forms for Financial Year 2024-25 or Assessment Year 2025-26. Now taxpayers can download these forms by visiting the official website of Income Tax.
The Income Tax Department gave this information by sharing the post on social media platform x. The department wrote in the post, ‘Taxpayers note, Excel utility for ITR-1 and ITR-4 is now available.’ This step has been taken to make returns filing easier and comfortable for taxpayers.
Which taxpayers are ITR-1 form?
Income tax return form-1 (ITR-1) is for taxpayers who earn from limited source. This form has been given a simple name. For the current assessment year, you can file this form with a resident of Rs 50 lakh or less.
This may include salary, house earnings, interest and other income sources, which can include long-term capital gains up to Rs 1.25 lakh under section 112A and agricultural income up to Rs 5,000. If you also fit on these parameters, you can use this form to file returns.
Who can fill the ITR-4 form?
At the same time, ITR-4 form has been named smooth. This return form is for people earning from small businesses or professions. It can be filled by resident individuals, Hindu undivided families (HUF) and firms (except LLP).
However, your total annual income should be less than Rs 50 lakh. Whereas the calculation of income from business or profession will be done under section 44AD, 44ADA or 44AE. It also includes a long-term capital gains (LTCG) of up to Rs 1.25 lakh under section 112A.
Income tax can be filed by 15 September
Earlier, the tax department has increased the last date for filing income tax return of FY 2025 from July 31 to September 15, 2025. The Income Tax Department gave this information on 27 May.
The ITR filing usually starts from April 1, but this year it is being delayed. It also started in April last year. Due to the delay, online tools required for ITR form were not available.

CA said- taxpayers will get relief from extension
CA Anand Jain had said- ‘This expansion is a welcome step, as the facility of filing ITR on the tax portal is not available till 5 pm on 27 May 2025.
In many cases, Annual Information Statement ie AIS is also not getting properly. Therefore, this extension will give relief to both professionals and taxpayers.


What are e-filing utilities and why are they so important?
E-Filing Utilities are the software tools that the Income Tax Department gives to the taxpayers to file their returns. These are two types:
- Online utility: It is mostly used by salaried people such as individual taxpayers. It contains pre-filled data such as salary, interest, income and TDS.
- Json and excel utilities: These tax professionals use, where the data is filled offline and uploaded on the portal.
It is not possible to file returns without these tools, as these data are necessary for validation, form submission and system integration.
What will happen if not filed on time?
If there was no return file by 15 September 2025, then there will be a penalty of Rs 1,000 for those with income less than 5 lakh and Rs 5,000 for those with more than 5 lakh income.
At the same time, outstanding tax will be charged 1% monthly interest under section 234A. Business or capital loss will not be carried forward next year, except for house property.
