
Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) on Thursday announced plans to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the iconic Wankhede Stadium here from January 12 to 19. A special logo was unveiled at the stadium here during a function attended by MCA officials and its apex council members.
MCA said, “Built in 1974, Wankhede Stadium is one of the most iconic cricket venues in the world which has witnessed historic moments in cricket history. From Sachin Tendulkar’s final international match in 2013 to India’s historic 2011 ODI World Cup title win, the stadium has been home to countless memories.”
A number of ceremonies will take place on different days during the celebrations and a special postage stamp will also be released. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and former MCA president and former BCCI treasurer Ashish Shelar will also be honored during the eight-day event.
During this time, a cricket match will be organized between MCA officials and Consul General and government officials on 12th January. President Ajinkya Naik said, “We are going to honor all the MCA groundsmen and organize a lunch for them because they are like unsung heroes. There are some other people like MCA security personnel who have been working for a long time and also MCA staff, we are going to honor everyone on January 15.
During this, a ‘Coffee Table Book’ will be launched by Ajay-Atul along with the music show on January 19. Like previous years, this time too a large number of people are expected to come, hence free entry facility cannot be provided and fans will have to buy a ticket of Rs 300 for this event. Many current and former players from Mumbai and India will also attend the event on January 19 along with Bollywood celebrities. Meanwhile, Naik also confirmed that MCA will celebrate the 75th birthday of the great Sunil Gavaskar once the date is finalised.
