China continues good relations with Taliban
On Wednesday (May 21, 2025), Mottaki, who attended the informal tripartite meeting of foreign ministers of China, Pakistan and Afghanistan, met Wang separately and also discussed bilateral issues. China was one of the early countries to continue diplomatic relations with the government formed after the Taliban captured power in 2021.
Afghanistan has a small border with an area called Wakhan Corridor. This corridor connects Afghanistan’s Badakhshan province to the unstable Jinjiang province of China, where China has allegedly initiated action on the East Turkistan Islamic Movement (ETIM), which allegedly belongs to the Islamic State and Al-Qaeda.
Taliban and Chinese Foreign Ministers support each other
Mukki told Wang, “The interim government of Afghanistan gives importance to traditional friendship with China and Beijing has an important place in foreign policy. The Afghan government strongly supports one-China theory and opposed China’s intervention in internal affairs of China.”
At the same time, Wang, a member of the Communist Party political bureau, welcomed Muttki’s visit to China on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between China and Afghanistan. To this, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said, “China, along with the independence, sovereignty and regional integrity of Afghanistan, as well as the independent options adopted by the Afghan people. As usual, China will support the Afghanistan government in achieving long-term peace and stability as soon as possible in the country.”
