Immigrant Detention Bill Donald Trump , President Donald Trump has registered his first legislative victory in the US Congress. The US Congress has given final approval to a bill led by the Republican Party. Under this bill, it will be necessary to detain and deport immigrants who enter the country without permission and are involved in crimes. This bill has been named “Lakeen Riley Act”, which marks the beginning of a comprehensive crackdown on immigration promised by President Donald Trump.
This bill was passed in the US Congress by 156 votes against 263. In this, 46 Democrats have also voted in favor of this bill, which reflects the growing all-party consensus to take a tough stance against those entering America illegally.
Bill named after Georgia student
The bill is named after Laken Riley, a 22-year-old Georgia student who was murdered during a race last year. A Venezuelan illegal immigrant was convicted of the murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole.
The culprit had earlier also been arrested for stealing from a shop, but was not taken into custody. Now Laken Riley’s case has again intensified the debate on immigration and crime in America.
Detain those who do not have valid documents
According to a report in The New York Times, the provisions of this bill require the Department of Homeland Security to detain immigrants living in the US without documents and legal status.
This bill has been passed by the House of Representatives. After which it was debated in the Senate last week. The bill has been amended to expand the list of offenses to include offenses involving assault on police officers causing grievous bodily harm or death.
