Pakistan AQI At Danger Level: Karachi and Lahore, two major cities of Pakistan, are polluted to a great extent. According to Air Quality Index (AQI) rankings, Karachi and Pakistan are the two most polluted cities in the world.
Lahore and Karachi, two major cities of neighboring country Pakistan, are both struggling with severe air pollution. Lahore is the most polluted city in the world with AQI of 354, which is a major threat to people’s health. According to the report of Express Tribune, this city with a population of more than 11 million has been suffering from poor air quality for a long time. The main reasons for air pollution are smoke coming from vehicles and industries and burning of crops.
Lakhs of people are in the grip of pollution
The quality of air becomes worse especially in cold weather. Due to this, people have to face serious respiratory problems including asthma and other lung diseases. Last month, 18,86,586 people fell ill due to smog, out of which 1,29,229 people are undergoing treatment in hospital for respiratory problems. At the same time, due to smog, more than 69,399 patients suffer from respiratory problems, chest pain or stroke every day. Along with this, cardiothoracic condition has been found to be the cause in 61,00,153 people.
Main reason for increase in air pollution
According to the report, Pakistan’s largest city Karachi is at 13th place in the list with 164 AQI. This results in poor quality of air. The main reasons for the poor air quality here are busy ports, heavy traffic and smoke emanating from industries. The air quality of both the cities is a threat to both the environment and health. However, despite continuous efforts to reduce air pollution, Karachi’s air quality is continuously deteriorating. Poor air quality poses a serious threat to people with existing health problems.
Yasir Hussain, director of Climate Action Center (CAC), a non-governmental environmental organization, blamed the smoke emitted from petrol and diesel vehicles for the pollution in these cities. According to Yasir, petrol and diesel vehicles are responsible for 60 percent pollution in Karachi and 80 percent in Lahore.
Along with this, the impact of measles in Pakistan during winter season has increased the concerns of health experts. Measles, with symptoms such as runny nose, fever, cough, red eyes and skin rashes, can be fatal for weakened children. Especially those children who are malnourished. Doctors have warned people that the highly contagious disease spreads rapidly from one child to another. Therefore, to protect children from this infectious disease, measles vaccine should be given between the age of nine months to one and a half years.
