Bangladesh: The condition of Awami League Party leaders and workers after last year’s coup in Bangladesh is not hidden from the world. Among the big leaders, one third are in jail, one third have had to leave the country and one third are hiding in Bangladesh. The houses and properties of these leaders were either looted or burnt. Now these leaders are waiting for law and order to return to their country. Many senior Awami League leaders have said this while talking to the newspaper ‘Indian Express’.
Mohamal Haq (78 years), a senior minister in Sheikh Hasina government, says, ‘Thousands of Awami League workers have had to leave their homes. They are hidden. Constantly changing their place. They have neither money nor food. Still, everyone still has hope somewhere. He tells that senior leaders believe that we all should return to our country on 26 March, the Independence Day of Bangladesh.
‘Discussion takes place on WhatsApp’
44-year-old Awami League MP Nahim Razzaq says that almost all the bail petitions of Awami League leaders have been rejected. At present we do not have any judicial authority. We know that if we go back there and demand re-election, we will all be put in jail indefinitely. Razzaq says that there is a continuous discussion among us about how to save the Awami League. This conversation takes place on WhatsApp between 30-40 MPs and former ministers.
‘Waiting for the law to return’
Former MP and Joint Secretary of Awami League, AFM Bahuddin Naseem says that he receives 200 to 300 calls from party workers every day. He says, ‘I am hidden but I am connected with the leaders and workers through some means or the other. Once the law is established there, we are ready to move forward.
‘Sheikh Hasina is in touch with leaders and workers’
Former MP Pankaj Nath says that Sheikh Hasina is also in constant touch with party leaders. She keeps sending messages to party workers through several WhatsApp groups. She also keeps getting information about the situation there from her leaders hiding in Bangladesh.
There are many names in this list, who are looking for a way to restore peace in Bangladesh. All the leaders hope that once again a time will come when they will be able to roam freely on the streets of Bangladesh.
