Asma al-Assad, wife of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, has filed for divorce from him. According to the report of Israeli newspaper Jerusalem Post, the wife of Assad, who has been ousted from power in Syria, is not happy living in Russia. She is planning to go to Britain. Asma has also applied to the Russian court to leave the country.
Asma married Bashar al-Assad in December 2000. Asma holds dual citizenship of Britain and Syria. He was born in London in 1975 to Syrian parents. Asma holds a degree in Computer Science and French Literature from King’s College, London.
Asma and Asad have three children, named Hafiz, Jean and Kareem. She is planning to live in London with her children. After the capture of the Syrian capital Damascus by rebel fighters on December 8, Bashar al-Assad left the country and took refuge in Russia with his family.
Assad family living under sanctions in Russia
According to the report of Jerusalem Post, Bashar al-Assad and his family are living in Moscow. Russia has given them asylum, but they are facing strict restrictions. Assad is barred from leaving Moscow or engaging in any political activity.
According to reports, Russian authorities have also seized Assad’s property. This includes 270 KG gold, 2 billion dollars in cash and 18 apartments in Moscow. According to Turkish media reports, Assad is also planning to leave Russia and go to Britain.
On the other hand, Russia has not yet given asylum to Assad’s brother Maher.
Russian officials are investigating Assad’s brother for harboring him. At present there is no information about their whereabouts.
Dawa Assad had sent 2 tons of cash from Syria to Russia
The Financial Times, quoting sources, has claimed that President Assad has sent $ 250 million (Rs 2,082 crore) in cash to Russia.
The report said that these transactions involved 100 dollar and 500 euro notes. These accounted for about 2 tonnes. It was flown from Damascus to Moscow’s Vnukovo Airport between March 2018 and May 2019. 21 flights were used to send this entire amount. On reaching Moscow it was deposited in Russian banks.
The report said that Western countries had imposed sanctions on the Assad government. In such a situation, they could not use dollars and euros. Therefore he decided to encash this amount in Russia.
America removes Syrian rebel Julani from terrorist list
For America, Abu Mohammed al-Julani, leader of the rebel group Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) in Syria, is no longer a terrorist. According to Al Jazeera’s report, the US government has removed the reward of 10 million dollars (Rs 85 crore) placed on Julani.
US officials took this decision after meeting with HTS leaders in Syria. US Assistant Secretary of State Barbara Leaf said that this decision has been taken after ousting President Bashar al-Assad from power.
After the fall of the Assad government, an American team has reached Syria. It is led by Barbara Leaf. US officials also met with HTS chief Abu Julani on Saturday morning. Barbara Leaf said that the talks with HTS leaders were very good and successful.
America had declared HTS a ‘terrorist’ organization in 2018. A year before this, a reward was placed on Abu Julani. According to reports, America is also considering removing the HTS group from the list of terrorist organization.
