Bengaluru, March 25 (Language) The Bharatiya Janata Party (language) protested in various parts of the state on Tuesday over the alleged statement of Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivkumar associated with changing the constitution to give four percent reservation to Muslims in Karnataka and demanded the resignation of the Deputy Chief Minister.
However, the senior Congress leader on Monday denied any such remarks and claimed that his words were ‘presented’ wrongly.
Shivkumar’s response came after repeated adjournment in the Lok Sabha over his alleged comments on the matter by the BJP on Monday. Condemning his alleged statement, BJP workers and its members today protested in various parts of Mandya, Chikballapura, Mysuru, Kalburgi and accused the Karnataka government of doing ‘politics of appeasement’.
The protesters demanded apology from Shivkumar and his immediate resignation. Protests took place in Basavangudi, Padmanabhnagar and Rajarajeshwari Nagar in Bengaluru.
A senior BJP official said, “Protests were held condemning DK Shivkumar’s statement regarding changing the constitution. Protests were held at all mandals, district levels across the state. Senior party leaders and former ministers like our MLA, Legislative Councilor, R Ashok and BY Vijayendra also joined the protests.
A protest was held in front of the Ambedkar statue under the leadership of BJP MLA TS Srivatsa in Mysuru, which comes under the boundary of Ashokpuram police station. Raising slogans of ‘Jai Bhima’, party workers garlanded Ambedkar’s statue and accused Shivkumar and the Congress party of being ‘anti -Dalit’ and ‘anti -constitution’.
Talking to reporters here, the BJP MLA demanded the dismissal of the Deputy Chief Minister and alleged that the statement made by Shivkumar is ‘anti -constitution’. He demanded that a case should be registered against him taking self -cognizance and he should be arrested for his alleged statement.
In Bidar, BJP workers burnt the effigy of Shivkumar on the city’s ‘Ambedkar Circle’ and raised slogans against the Congress government led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
Former Union Minister Bhagwant Khuba participated in the protests with other BJP leaders and condemned the ‘statement’.
In Hubli, a protest was held at Sangoli Rainnah Chowk in the city under the leadership of BJP MLA Mahesh Tenginkai. The protesters beat Shivkumar’s picture with slippers, shouting slogans against Shivkumar.
In Kalburgi, BJP workers held a huge protest against four percent reservation given to Muslims in public contracts from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Chowk to District Magistrate Office and condemned Shivkumar’s alleged statement.
The Karnataka Legislative Assembly on Friday passed a bill to give four percent reservation to Muslims in public contracts despite strict opposition from opposition BJP.
