Newly elected US President Donald Trump claimed on Sunday (December 8, 2024) that America is giving subsidies of $ 100 billion and $ 300 billion to its two neighboring countries, Canada and Mexico, respectively. He said that if this is so, then both these countries should become a part of America. Trump (78) has threatened that if Canada and Mexico stop the flow of illegal immigrants from their respective territories into America. If not stopped, he will impose heavy tariffs on both the countries.
Donald Trump told ‘NBC News’ Said in an interview, ‘We are giving subsidies of more than 100 billion US dollars to Canada every year. We are giving subsidies worth about 300 billion US dollars to Mexico. We should not give subsidy. Why are we giving subsidies to these countries? If we are giving them subsidies, then they (America) should become a state.’
After winning the presidential election in America on November 5, Sunday’s ‘talk show’ This was Trump’s first interview. He said, ‘We are subsidizing Mexico, we are subsidizing Canada and we are subsidizing many countries around the world. All I want to say is that everyone should get equal, fast and fair opportunities.’
Donald Trump refuted the comments of some American CEOs (Chief Executive Officers) that the tariffs will harm America and The prices of common goods will increase, which will increase the pressure on the common people.
He said, ‘It will not make any difference to the Americans. He created a great economy for us. If we have to face problems related to war and other things like tariffs, I would like to respond to the war with tariffs (taxes). I would say that if you people want to fight, then it is good that you fight. But, both of you will pay 100 percent duty to America. If used properly, fees serve many purposes. I am not saying that you should use them like crazy. I say use them properly.’
He said, ‘This will not cause any harm to the country, rather it will give money to the country. We never got a chance to work with full force because we fought the Covid-19 pandemic before this. We dealt with it very well, successfully. When I handed over the reins of power to Joe Biden (outgoing President), the stock market was higher than just before the arrival of the Covid-19 pandemic. Tariffs (taxes), if used properly, are a very powerful tool not only economically, but also to achieve other things outside economics.’
During the interview. Trump was asked, ‘Are you going to impose these tariffs or is this just a negotiating tactic?’ Trump said, ‘Let me give you an example. Millions of people are coming to our country from Canada and especially Mexico. I spoke to both (leaders of Canada and Mexico). I talked to Justin Trudeau. Donald Trump said, ‘I told the President of Mexico and Justin Trudeau, if this does not stop, I will impose about 25 percent on your country. Will charge.’
