China executed official involved in Corruption: China on Tuesday (December 17) hanged Li Jianping, a former official of north China’s Inner Mongolia autonomous region. Li Jianping was convicted in the country’s biggest ever corruption case involving more than US$421 million.
The death sentence for Li Jianping, a former secretary of the Communist Party Working Committee that rules the Hohhot Economic and Technological Development Zone, was originally scheduled for September 2022 and was upheld on appeal in August 2024. According to the report of the government news agency Xinhua, on Tuesday (December 17), after the approval of the Supreme People’s Court of China, a court in Inner Mongolia carried out Li’s death sentence.
Jianping was involved in the biggest corruption case in the country
Li Jianping, 64, was found guilty by an intermediate court of illegally embezzling three billion yuan (more than US$421 million). The amount involved in this case is the largest amount involved in a corruption case in the history of China.
The main basis of Jinping government’s model
After coming to power in 2012, Chinese President Xi Jinping made the anti-corruption campaign a mainstay of his government model. According to state media reports, more than one million party officials have been punished in this campaign, including two defense ministers and dozens of military officers.
Jinping asked to confront the corruption of officials
In his speech at the Plenary Session of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) in January this year, Chinese President Xi Jinping called on Party officials to confront corruption head-on.
