Mamdani has won the Democratic Primary election for the post of Mayor of New York Town.
A video is going viral, eating rice from Johran Mamdani, a candidate for Mayor from New York. A US MP has expressed displeasure over this.
American Republican MP Brandon Gill wrote on X, “Civilized people in America do not eat this way. If you cannot adopt western methods, then go back to your backward country.”
Mamdani was talking on the Palestinian issue in the video. He said- When you grow up in a third world, you understand the Palestinian struggle better.
Users trolled MP on social media
A video of Johran Mamdani has started a debate on social media. New York MP Brandon Gill expressed displeasure over the comment on the video and started trolling them on social media.
One user tightened and asked, “Are you angry at eating chopsticks in Asian restaurant?” The other wrote, “How do you eat Taco, French fries and burgers? Do chips also eat with thorns?” Another user said, “You are unable to criticize their policies, so now they are attacking their culture.”
Many users opposed Brandon Gill on social media.
Mamdani accused of showing in front of camera
Apart from this, some people also accused Mamdani of exaggerating their cultural identity. A user shared an old picture of Mamdani, in which he was eating with knives and forks.
The user wrote, “Johran always eats with a knife, but shows it by hand in front of the camera as he is outsider.”
A user shared this picture with a knife-kante of Mamdani and accused the camera of pretending to eat by hand.
Mamdani said- billionaires increase inequality
Earlier on Sunday, Mamdani was surrounded by controversies due to one of her statements. He had said in an interview- Billions of billionaires increase inequality, no one should be allowed to be a billionaire in the world.
In the show ‘Meat the Press’ of NBC News, Mamdani said, “We should not have a billionaire. So much money is not good in the time of inequality. We need equality in the city, state and country.”
Mamdani said that he wants to increase tax on the richest people and big companies in New York. He said, “I want to increase 1% tax on the richest people so that everyone’s life is better, including tax payers.”
At the same time, Mamdani was called a communist by President Donald Trump, which was denied by Mamdani. He said, “I am not a communist. Trump talks on my looks, voice and identity so that I divert attention from my work. I am fighting for the working people whom Trump cheated.”
Trump supporters described Mammadani as a threat to New York
Mamdani has won the Democratic Primary election for the post of Mayor of New York Town. Its results came on 24 June. For the first time, Mamdani of South Asian, Bharatvanshi and Muslim origin defeated former governor Andrew Qumo.
Amid Mamdani’s victory, Republican leaders of President Donald Trump’s right -wing party and former officials of the Trump administration started sharp attacks on him.
In these attacks, Mammadani was described as a threat to a pro -terrorism and New York city. Former Trump Administration advisor Stephen Miller described Mammadani’s victory as a ‘failure of American migration policy’.
Republican representative from Tennessee, Andy Ogles accused Mammadani of supporting terrorism and demanded the cancellation of his citizenship from Attorney General Palm Bandi.
Johran is married to 27 -year -old Syrian artist Rama Duvaji.
Johran is the son of filmmaker Meera Nair
Johran Mamdani is the son of Indian-American filmmaker Meera Nair. Meera Nair has made films like Salaam Bombay, Monsoon Wedding and The Namesake. Johran’s father Mahmood is a professor at Columbia University and is a famous Indian-Yagandai scholar.
Mamdani was born in Uganda, but grew up in America. Johran’s mother Meera Nair is an American citizen of Indian origin and Hindu descendants. His father Mahmood Mamdani is a citizen and Muslim of Uganda of Indian origin.
In early 2025, Johran married 27 -year -old Syrian artist Rama Duvaji. Rama is an Illustrator and animator. His work has been published in big publications like The New Yorker, The Washington Post and Vice.

American citizenship received in 2018
When Mamdani was five years old, his family moved to Cape Town in South Africa. When Mamdani was 7 years old, the family shifted to New York. Johran had a bachelor’s degree from Bodine College, Main in 2014 at Africana Studies.
After completing college, Johran got US citizenship in the year 2018. He learned politics by working for Democratic candidates in Queens and Brooklyn.
