Bangladesh News: The demand to replace the capital Dhaka in Bangladesh is gaining momentum. The main reason for this is a huge shortage of basic facilities in the city. More than one crore people live in this city, situated in an area of 306 square kilometers, out of which more than 80 percent of the population is living below the poverty line.
Dhaka is situated on the banks of river, but even a large number of clean drinking water is not available. The random urbanization has spoiled the situation. Except for select areas, the whole city is struggling with disorganized development. Dust-soil, broken roads, disrupted traffic, weak law and order and lack of basic facilities have made the lives of residents here difficult.
Dhaka is not worth living!
According to the report of Dhaka Tribune, now the local people are not considering this city as eligible to live. The report quoted businessman Zahidur Rahman as saying that he is very concerned about the situation of Dhaka. He said, ‘This city is no longer worth living. I live here only because of my work, otherwise I would have left it long ago.
Citizens have to face congestion under compulsion due to everything being centralized in Dhaka. Even if someone wants to go out of this city in search of a safe and better life, it is not an easy option.
Public transport plight
According to the report, the public transport situation in Dhaka is so pathetic that passengers do not get a place to stand. Due to the huge crowd in the buses, many people are forced to take risks and travel through the door.
Shareing his everyday struggle, Maruful Haq, an official of a private bank, said, ‘It is almost impossible to find a place in the bus in office time. But leaving the job is not an option, so we have to climb in the bus in any way, whether have to push or travel by hanging from the door.
It is difficult to walk on the streets
Expressing disappointment, Maruful Haq said, ‘The congestion is not limited to buses. Roads are jammed all the time, and it becomes difficult to walk on the sidewalks. But there is no option. We have to live in this city. We travel in buses, fight with traffic and reach our work tiredly. This is our everyday bitter truth.
He said, ‘Just as a doctor can guess the patient’s heartbeat, similarly the situation of Dhaka is also becoming serious. Despite heavy investment, there was no significant improvement. This city has now become a victim of chaos and negligence. Many countries like India, Pakistan, Brazil, Nigeria, Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia, Egypt and South Korea have either changed their capitals or are planning to change. The main reason for this is the growing population and a severe traffic problem.
Northeast Bangladesh can become an option of new capital
According to Dr. Shamsul Haq, Dhaka immediately needs an alternative capital, and in this context, Northeast Bangladesh can be a suitable option. He said, ‘This idea may be shocking for some people, while some can see it emotionally. But a country cannot run only on the basis of emotions. If we had already planned, Purvanchal could have proved to be an affordable and practical option.
He further said, ‘Purvanchal is located on the high area and is flood -free, which is a very important feature for a capital. In contrast, landfilling had to be done for land improvement in other areas of Dhaka, but there is already solid and strong ground available in Purvanchal, which also reduces construction costs.
