Donald Trump had proposed annexing Denmark in 2019. file photo
America’s newly elected President Donald is continuously making statements that trouble his allies and neighboring countries before his swearing-in. On Monday, Trump talked about taking Greenland under America’s control. Trump wrote on social media that America feels that our control over Greenland is very important for national security and freedom in the whole world.
Let us tell you that Greenland is an island located in the North Atlantic Ocean. It is an autonomous region under the control of Denmark. Which has its own Prime Minister.
Greenland Prime Minister Mute Egede responded to Trump and said-
Greenland is ours. We are not for sale and will never be for sale. We must not lose our long struggle for freedom.
So far, Denmark’s Foreign Ministry or Prime Minister’s Office has not given any statement on this. Trump had earlier also proposed to buy Greenland in 2019.
Know Greenland
57 thousand people live in Greenland. Greenland is an autonomous region of Denmark. Greenland is the largest island in the world, with an area of approximately 21 lakh square km. 85% of Greenland is covered by a 1.9-mile-thick (3 km) ice sheet. It contains 10% of the world’s fresh water. About 57,000 people live here. It is between the North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean. Greenland is facing the crisis of climate change.
Greenland has reserves of many rare minerals such as neodymium, praseodymium, dysprosium, terbium and uranium. These minerals play a very important role in the production of electric vehicles.
Apart from this, due to the ever increasing global warming in the world, the ice of Greenland and the Arctic continent is melting rapidly. In such a situation, the strategic and economic importance of this place is increasing rapidly. China also has a stake in the companies doing mining work here.
America had earlier also expressed its desire to buy Greenland This is not the first time that an American President has expressed his desire regarding Greenland. Earlier in 1946, the then US President Harry Truman had tried to buy this icy island from Denmark for 100 million dollars. There is a US Air Force base in the north-western region of Greenland, where about 600 soldiers are deployed.
Trump has threatened to snatch the Panama Canal
Trump has earlier offered Canada and Mexico to meet in America. Apart from this, two days ago he had also threatened to take the Panama Canal back under American control. This canal is part of the Caribbean country Panama. America had control over this canal till 1999.
After this threat by Trump, Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino strongly reprimanded him. Mulino had said that Panama’s independence would not be compromised.
The Panama Canal is located between North and South America. Before the construction of this canal, ships going from the West Coast of America to the East Coast had to travel thousands of nautical miles and go around South America via Cape Horn.
After the construction of the canal, the journey of thousands of miles of ships reduced.
