India exports 2.5 million tonnes of onion every year worldwide.
Now farmers will be able to sell onions without giving export duty abroad. The government has decided to remove it from April 1. Onion exports were implemented from 13 September 2024 to 20%. The Revenue Department issued a notification on Saturday and informed about this.
Earlier, the government had banned exports for about 5 months (8 December 2023 to 3 May 2024) to maintain the availability of onion in the country. During this period, onion prices have declined by about 39% across the country, while the retail price has decreased by 10% in the last one month.

11.65LMT onion exported in this financial year According to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, despite these export sanctions, the total export of onion during FY 2023-24 was 17.17 lakh MT (LMT). Whereas, 11.65lmt onion has been exported by 18 March 2025 in the current financial year 2024-25. The matter of export on the monthly basis was extended to 72 thousand tonnes of onion onion in September-2024, which has increased to 1.85 LMT in January 2025.
Prices falling due to increase in arrival of onion Onions have increased in major markets like Lasalgaon and Pimplegaon. Due to this, there is further decline in prices. Onion prices in Lasalgaon and Pimplegaon mandis on 21 March 2025 were Rs 1330 per quintal and Rs 1325 per quintal.
According to government estimates, this year Rabi onion is estimated to be 227lmt, which is 18% higher than the previous year’s 192LMT. Rabi onion is 70–75% of India’s total production and its good crop plays an important role in keeping prices stable by the next kharif season (October/November). This increased production is expected to provide further relief in onion prices in the coming months.
