Former Indian all -rounder Syed Abid Ali, who was famous for his versatility and efficient fielding, died on Wednesday after a prolonged illness. He was 83 years old. Abid Ali was included in a group of luxurious cricketers from Hyderabad, part of MAK Pataudi, ML Jaisimha and Abbas Ali Baig. He died in America.
The news of Abid Ali’s death was shared by North America Cricket League (NACL). NACL posted on its Facebook page, “I am sharing the news of the death of India’s cricket veteran Syed Abid Ali with full reverence, who made Treads of California his home and whose remarkable heritage inspires us to try for excellence.”
He said, “North America Cricket League and North California Cricket Association (NCCA) are grateful to their tireless efforts and contribution in the development of cricket in the Gulf region which is proof of their permanent influence. Let us remember them in our prayers and celebrate their remarkable heritage. ”
Abid Ali made his Test debut against Australia in December 1967 in Test cricket in Adelaide and took six wickets for 55 runs in the first innings. In the same series, he also played innings of 78 and 81 runs in the Sydney Test, showing his potential in batting.
Abid Ali played 29 Tests for India between 1967 and 1974 in which he scored 1018 runs and took 47 wickets. He was identified for a fast race amid wickets and was one of the best fielders of his time.
Abid Ali also had a rare specificity. He started both batting and bowling for India in several matches. He did this twice against New Zealand in 1968, three times on home ground in 1969 and twice on a tour of West Indies in 1971.
His ODI career was brief but historic. Abid Ali was part of the Indian team led by Ajit Wadekar, who played his first ODI against England in 1974 in Headingley. It was a 55 -over match in which India lost.
Ali was also part of the Indian team in the first ODI World Cup in 1975 and played three matches. His best performance in the ODI format was against New Zealand where he scored 70 off 98 balls.
Abid Ali scored 93 runs in five ODIs and took seven wickets. Domestically, he played 212 first class matches, scoring 8,732 runs, including the highest score of 173 not out. He also took 397 wickets with the best performance of six wickets for 23 runs.
The cricket world paid tribute to him and remembered him as a dedicated teacher, a team player and an extraordinary person.
