One Country One Election: The government will introduce two bills related to “One Country, One Election” in the Lok Sabha on December 16.
Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal will introduce the Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill and the Union Territory Laws (Amendment) Bill in the Lower House.
The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, had on December 12 approved the Constitutional Amendment Bill to implement the concept of simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.
The Cabinet has approved two draft laws, one of which is the Constitution Amendment Bill related to simultaneous elections of Lok Sabha and State Assemblies, while the other bill is related to simultaneous elections of three Union Territories having Legislative Assemblies. To pass a Constitution Amendment Bill, a two-thirds majority is required, while the second bill requires a simple majority in the House.
Although a high-level committee led by former President Ram Nath Kovind had proposed holding municipal and panchayat elections in a phased manner along with the Lok Sabha and state assembly elections, the Cabinet has decided not to hold the local body elections “for the time being”. Have decided to keep distance from the issue.
