Former Team India batsman Suresh Raina said on Tuesday that captain Rohit Sharma and star batsman Virat Kohli may have been struggling to score runs for some time, but their form will be the key to India’s success in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy. The Champions Trophy will start in Pakistan from 19 February and will run till March 9. India will play all its matches in Dubai as per the Hybrid Model Agreement.
Suresh Raina said in a conversation with the broadcast ‘Star Sports’, Rohit Sharma’s strike rate has improved after the ODI World Cup in 2023. Since then, he has scored at a strike rate of 119-120, making him one of the best ODI batsmen in India. For Rohit and Virat, I would say that when you have a strong record of previous good performances, it gives you a lot of confidence. They support each other well and both have the skills to play big innings. If they do well, then India’s campaign in the Champions Trophy will benefit greatly.
In the group stage of the tournament, India has been placed with arch -rivals Pakistan, New Zealand and Bangladesh. Regarding the spin department and team combination, Raina said, “I think (Ravindra) Jadeja will definitely play, because he is quite effective in ODIs.” Kuldeep (Yadav) has not played any match since the injury but we also have Akshar Patel which is continuously doing well. Fast bowlers will get movement on Dubai pitches, but spin bowlers will also play an important role. Therefore Kuldeep, Akshar and Jadeja should be in top form.
Prior to the Champions Trophy, India also has to play a three -match ODI series at home against England and Raina believes that this will give players like Kohli and Rohit a chance to spend time before this prestigious competition. Three ODIs against England will be played in Nagpur, Ahmedabad and Cuttack where traditionally big scores are scored.
