India Bangladesh Rift: India on Thursday decided to release 90 Bangladeshi fishermen. A press release was issued by the Ministry of External Affairs stating that India has decided to release 90 Bangladeshi fishermen. This step is part of the mutual release and extradition process of fishermen between India and Bangladesh.
A press release issued by the ministry said that in recent months several Indian fishermen were arrested by Bangladeshi authorities after they mistakenly crossed the International Maritime Boundary Line into Bangladeshi waters. Similarly, several Bangladeshi fishermen have also been arrested by Indian authorities for the same reason. The Government of India attaches utmost importance to the safety, welfare and well-being of Indian fishermen and in this regard the Government has worked hard to ensure the release of Indian fishermen from Bangladeshi custody.
The release further said that on Thursday, 95 Indian fishermen were handed over to the Bangladesh Coast Guard by the Bangladeshi authorities, who will hand them over to the Indian Coast Guard on January 5, 2025. On the same day, 90 Bangladeshi fishermen will also be released at sea by Indian and Bangladeshi coast guard officials as part of a mutual release and extradition operation.
The mutual exchange of fishermen and their vessels has been designed keeping in mind primarily the humanitarian and livelihood concerns of the fishing communities on both sides.
Bangladesh changed ‘history’
New textbooks have been introduced in Bangladesh, in which it has been told that Ziaur Rahman had declared the country’s independence in 1971, whereas in the books till now the credit for this has been given to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. This information has been given in a news published in the media.
In the news of ‘Daily Star’ newspaper it has been said that many changes have been made in the new textbooks of primary and secondary students. The title of ‘Father of the Nation’ for Mujibur Rahman has also been removed from the textbooks.
In the news, National Curriculum and Textbook Board Chairman Professor A.K.M. Riyajul Hasan has been quoted as saying that the new textbooks for the academic year 2025 will mention that “On March 26, 1971, Ziaur Rahman declared the independence of Bangladesh and on March 27, he made another declaration of independence on behalf of Bangabandhu .”
