India-Bangladesh Relations: Bangladesh had once tried to show its eyes against India, but today the same Bangladesh itself is forced to ask for help from India to save its existence. Bangladesh, which was recently seen adopting a contradictory attitude with India on many fronts. Today it is fighting to save its existence. Fertilizer crisis within the country: Amid border tensions and international pressures, the interim government of Bangladesh under the leadership of Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus has appealed to India for help.
In fact, Bangladesh has been engulfed by the crisis. There is currently a huge shortage of basic necessities like potatoes and onions in Bangladesh. The situation has become so serious that the Bangladesh government has started seeking help from countries like India, Germany, Egypt, China and Spain. India recently exported 4686 tonnes of potatoes to Bangladesh, which reached from Malda in West Bengal to Jasaur district of Bangladesh. Apart from this, Bangladesh has contacted China, Pakistan and Turkey to meet the onion shortage.
The dominance of Myanmar’s Ara Kan Army increased
The dominance of Myanmar’s Ara Kan Army has increased on the south-eastern border of Bangladesh. This group wants control over Rakhine state in Bangladesh and has now reached close to the border of Bangladesh. Bangladesh is already bearing the burden of millions of Rohingya refugees. Now the situation may become even more serious due to the influence of Arakan Army. Seeing this pressure, Bangladesh has deployed its Navy Coast Guard and Special Forces on the border.
Sour relations between India and Bangladesh
After the removal of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from power, relations between India and Bangladesh turned sour. The interim government canceled the Band with Transit agreement with India and has tried to increase contacts with countries like Pakistan and Turkey to reduce its dependence on India. India had given immediate help to Bangladesh to overcome the fertilizer crisis. But this help is limited only to business benefits.
Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has hope from India
India is ensuring that Bangladesh is dependent on India instead of procuring goods from other countries, while the Arakan Army, which has once been in support of India, has become a major threat to Bangladesh. However, India later distanced itself from it. However, relations between India and Ara Kaan Army seem to be improving again. But now Arakan Army has become a reason for India’s benefit and concern for Bangladesh. Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina has expressed the possibility of help from India regarding the increasing threat on Sand Martin Island and the border. India’s strategy is clear, it has to wait for the right time to put Bangladesh under pressure if needed. India understands that it is not possible to completely ignore a neighboring country like Bangladesh. But protecting our interests is priority.
