Bihar topped the last financial year in increasing consumption. Now in the top-5.
The expenses of spending in Indian homes are changing rapidly. Now people are moving beyond bread, cloth and house to raise their status in society and increase spending on disrespect goods (amateur things). This change in urban areas is much faster.
This has been revealed in the consumption report 2025 of business services company CMS Info Systems. According to the report, the average monthly expenditure on consumer durables increased by 72% in FY 2024-25 ended March 31 this year.
This was the reason for increasing the expenditure on more shopping of houses and increasing house decorating. The report also stated that in 2023-24, the expenditure on consumer durables increased by just 6%. This trend continues in 2025 as well.
People are spending more on consumer durables like fridge, washing machine, TV, sofa and daily branded goods (FMCG).
Shopping increased from multi-brand store; E-commerce was reduced, quick commerce is growing
- Expensive shopping from Store: Purchase of premium products increased from the store. In 2024-25, the expenditure on multi-brand outlets increased by 12%, while in 2023-24 declined by 29%.
- Recovery in FMCG: In the FY 2025, ending on 31 March, FMCG i.e. Indians’ expenditure on everyday things increased by 4%. In 2022-23, this expenditure was reduced by 22%. It was almost stable in 2023-24.
- Cash-based consumption increased: Last focus, 5 states of North India are focusing on cash-based conference. Bihar, Himachal and Chhattisgarh have come in this list for the first time in 3 years.
- Cash withdrawal fast: In 2024-25, the average amount extracted from ATM every month increased. Cash withdrawal in October 2024 increased 4% in January 2025, 5% in February 2025 and 6% in March 2025.
- Quick commerce increased: As of March, Quick Commerce rose 10%, while e-commerce declined by 17%. The reason, quick commerce delivers in 15-30 minutes, while e-commerce platforms take several days to deliver the goods.

Bihar top to increase conjption
Bihar topped the last financial year in increasing consumption. The two years before this was not even in Bihar Top-5. Last financial year, Karnataka was out of the list of Top-5 states. On the other hand, the entry of Chhattisgarh and Himachal Pradesh took place.
ATM withdrawn increased by 3%, UPI size 8% decreased
The average ticket size of cash withdrawal from ATM in 2024-25 was Rs 5,658. This is 3% more than 2023-24. In contrast, the average ticket size of UPI transactions in the first half of 2024 was Rs 1,478, which is about 8% less than a year ago.
According to the Reserve Bank, by March 2024, 60% of consumer spending was cash. In the last 10 years, currency trend increased by 157%, ATM number increased by 32% and bank branch increased by 36%.
Use of cash in the country has been increasing continuously since 2017
The use of cash in the country is continuously increasing. According to CMAC ATM cash dispens data, India has been continuously increasing cash withdrawal since 2017. The impact of the Kovid epidemic in this case led to a decline in 2021 only.
According to the report, UPI and digital transactions are also increasing. This has led to the speed of increasing withdrawal from ATMs, but growth remained. This growth has also increased in recent months as the size of digital transactions per transaction has decreased.
