In 1996, under the captaincy of Mohammad Azharuddin, the process of defeat started and England defeated India by 8 wickets. In 2011, England, led by MS Dhoni, defeated India by an innings and 242 runs. In 2018, Virat Kohli’s team also had to face defeat by 31 runs.
In 2022, when the 5th Test match was postponed in Edgebeston in 2022, captain Jasprit Bumrah was and India also lost by 7 wickets this time. Overall, India has played 8 Tests on this ground, out of which 7 were defeated and there was a draw.
Story of India’s defeat in the first Test
In the Leeds Test, India scored 105 runs while batting first, and then stopped England’s innings at 353. After this, India scored 423 runs in the second innings on the basis of KL Rahul’s 137 -run century and a big partnership with Yashasvi Jaiswal and gave England a target of 371 runs.
But English openers Ben Docket scored 149 runs and Jack Crolye scored 65 runs and failed all the strategy of India by sharing 188 runs for the first wicket. Root’s 53 runs and Jamie Smith’s unbeaten innings of 44 runs completed the rest and England won the match by 5 wickets.
India’s fielding was also poor in the match, especially Yashasvi Jaiswal left 4 easy catches. Due to which the England team got around 160 runs extra. After this defeat, India is 0–1 in the series.
Shubman Gill has a golden opportunity
Shubman Gill is captaining India for the first time in this series. In the first Test, he looked helpless many times, but now he has a chance to prove himself and create history. If India wins Edgbaston, Shubman Gill will become the first Indian captain to win on this ground. The work which Kohli, Dhoni, Ganguly and Dravid have not been able to do yet.
