India’s largest airline IndiGo became the world’s most valuable airline on Wednesday (Thursday) according to the market capitalization. This has been reported from Bloomberg data.
According to Bloomberg, IndiGo achieved this position, leaving the US based delta airlines behind for some time. However, IndiGo returned to the position of the second most valuable airline in the world shortly after.
In fact, IndiGo shares today made a day-high of Rs 5,265 and 52 weeks high during trading. Due to which the company’s market cap increased to 2.01 lakh crore rupees i.e. 23.24 billion dollars. The market cap of Delta is $ 23.18 billion.
However, this lead of Indigo could not remain intact when the market was closed. The company’s stock rose by Rs 37.85 (0.73%) to a level of Rs 5,194.90 and the market cap came to $ 23.16 billion. This is a little less than the market cap of the delta.
This is a major achievement for airline like Indigo, which started commercial operations in August 2006 itself. The delta has been flying since 1929. Six years ago, Delta’s market cap was $ 36.67 billion, while IndiGo had $ 7.72 billion.
According to the aviation analytics firm Syrium, IndiGo operates 15,768 flights every week, which is 12.7% higher than in April last year. The delta operates 35,144 flights every week, which is 6.6% more than this month last year.
By the end of 2024, IndiGo had a 437 aircraft fleet. The airline has locked delivery by 2035 with a large order given to Airbus. IndiGo is going to get 925 new aircraft from the European plane manufacturer in the next decade.
To meet the increasing demand in the country’s air travel market, Indian airlines have ordered several aircraft orders since 2023. In February 2023, Tata Group’s Air India ordered 470 aircraft. The company ordered 250 aircraft order to Airbus and 220 aircraft to Boeing.
In June 2023, IndiGo placed the world’s largest aircraft order. The company then dealt with Airbus to 500 Naro Body A320NEO Family Plane. In January 2024, the new airline Akasa Air ordered a 150B737 Max Aircraft with Boeing.
Three months later, IndiGo placed its first order of 30-A350 Wide-Body Aircraft to Airbus, which was a major step towards its international operation and expansion of the network. In October 2024, Air India ordered 85 aircraft to Airbus.
The Air India Group and IndiGo currently have more than 90% stake in the Domestic Passenger Market. India has around 800 commercial aircrafts in the sky and most of them are from the European plane manufacturer Airbus.
