Israeli Military Chief Of Staff Resigns: Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi announced his resignation. He said that he will leave his post on March 6. In a statement, the Israeli military chief said he was resigning on October 7 after accepting responsibility for the IDF’s failure.
He said that by March 6, he would complete the investigation into the October 7 Hamas attack and prepare the IDF for future challenges. According to The Times of Israel, the IDF chief wrote in his resignation letter, ‘For the past four decades, the mission to defend Israel has been the driving force of my life. From my early days as a soldier and youth commander to my role as Chief of Staff, I have been proud to be part of the IDF. I have considered it as an exemplary organization.
‘The responsibility for this failure will remain mine’
Halevi wrote, ‘On the morning of October 7, the IDF, under my command, failed in its mission to protect Israeli civilians. The Israeli people paid a heavy and painful price in the form of lives lost, hostages taken, and physical and emotional injuries. The courageous actions of many people (security forces personnel, IDF soldiers and commanders, and brave civilians) – were not enough to prevent this great disaster. My responsibility for this terrible failure is with me every day, every hour, and will be with me for the rest of my life.
The IDF chief said in the letter, “Recognizing my responsibility for the failure of the IDF Chief of Staff on October 7, and at a time when the IDF has recorded extraordinary achievements and restored Israel’s deterrence and strength, I, on March 6, I request you to end your tenure in 2025.
‘This decision was taken long ago’
Halevi said, ‘This decision was taken a long time ago. Now, with the IDF dominant in all areas of the war and another hostage withdrawal agreement in the works, the time has come. Israel and Hamas on Sunday began implementing a ceasefire agreement, which includes an exchange of hostages and prisoners.
At the same time, Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid also demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his government on Tuesday (January 21). Lapid said he saluted military chief Herzi Halevi for stepping down and added: “Now, it is time for him to take responsibility and resign – the prime minister and his entire disastrous government.”
Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, killing about 1200 people and taking 251 people hostage. After this, Israel started attacks in Gaza in which at least 47,035 Palestinians have been killed and 111,091 have been injured.
