Following the implementation of the much-awaited ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, Israeli Ambassador to India Reuven Azar on Sunday (January 19, 2025) thanked India for supporting his country’s right to self-defense.
The ceasefire agreement between the two sides came after 15 months of conflict. This war started after the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. This agreement is expected to help in stopping the ongoing war in Gaza and in the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas.
In a video released by the Israeli Embassy, Reuven Azar said, ‘I want to thank the Indian government for supporting our right to self-defense and we especially appreciate the tremendous support of the Indian people.’
On October 7, 2023, Israel launched a large-scale military attack in Gaza in response to the attack on Israeli cities by Hamas. India has consistently called for a ceasefire and creation of an environment for direct peace talks towards a two-state solution to the Palestine issue.
The Israeli ambassador said, ‘The ceasefire that Israel has signed is the first phase of a gradual agreement that will help in the return of our hostages and will also ensure that Hamas will never commit genocide against the Israeli people. Will not be able to do as he did on October 7 (2023). He said that if Hamas is allowed to re-arm and re-organize, peace will not be established.
Reuven Azar also targeted Iran and alleged that the Iranian regime still remains the biggest threat to our region. India welcomed the Gaza ceasefire agreement on Wednesday. The Foreign Ministry said, ‘We welcome the release of the hostages and the announcement of the agreement for a ceasefire in Gaza.’ The Foreign Ministry said, ‘We hope that this will ensure safe and continuous supply of humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza.’
