On the basis of the recommendations made by the committees, the government has decided to honor Manu Bhakar, D Gukesh, Harmanpreet Singh and para athlete Praveen Kumar with Khel Ratna. Let us remind you that a few days ago, controversy had arisen when Manu Bhaker’s name was not included in the recommended list of athletes to receive the Khel Ratna Award. However, later Manu himself admitted that perhaps a mistake had been made on his part.
Manu Bhakar had created history by winning 2 medals in shooting in Paris Olympics. She became the first Indian athlete to win two different medals in singles competitions of the same Olympics. In the same games, Harmanpreet Singh had won the bronze medal for the Indian hockey team under his captaincy. This was the second consecutive time that India won the bronze medal in the Olympics. Whereas D Gukesh became the youngest world champion in the history of chess just a few weeks ago. He had achieved the title of world champion at the age of just 18. Praveen Kumar had won the gold medal in the high-jump competition of T64 category of Paralympics.
Let us tell you that the Sports Ministry has released the list of a total of 32 athletes who will be honored with the Arjuna Award. 17 para athletes have been kept in these.
