Kriti Sanon criticizes PR-driven awards culture: 'There are many things to change'

Kriti Sanon has voiced her concerns about the evolving culture of film award shows, emphasizing how far they have strayed from their original purpose.
In a candid conversation on Ranveer Allahbadia’s podcast, Kriti reflected on the simplicity of award functions in the 1990s and contrasted it with the PR-heavy approach of today.

Do you think award functions today have lost their authenticity?

The ‘Do Patti’ actress pointed out that during the 90s, there were only a handful of award shows, which primarily focused on celebrating artistic achievements rather than showcasing glamour. She noted that actors would often arrive in casual attire, with no emphasis on designer labels or red-carpet appearances.
According to Kriti, this shift in focus has raised questions about the authenticity and relevance of modern award shows. She said, “If I could change one thing about today’s time there are many things to change, but one of the things would definitely be this.”
Highlighting the rise of multiple events hosted by various portals, she observed, “In the 90s, there used to be two award functions, maximum three. Now, every portal has an award function. Suddenly, I have started feeling, how much does it matter?”
Kriti expressed her desire for changes in the industry, suggesting that today’s awards culture could benefit from a greater emphasis on genuine appreciation of talent and craft. While she acknowledged the industry’s evolution, she lamented the loss of simplicity and authenticity that once defined these events.
Kriti’s comments echo sentiments previously shared by Saif Ali Khan, who had called modern award shows “tamasha” and questioned their value beyond monetary gains. He had described them as opportunities for performers to earn money rather than true celebrations of art and community.
Meanwhile, Kriti’s previous outing was ‘Do Patti’. Take a look at our ETimes review for the film which reads, “Characters are one-dimensional, not layered and no efforts are taken to build them. Kajol as a feisty single woman cop, cannot stand fools. Her banter with her subordinate Brijendra Kala is probably the only interesting thing here. Sadly, this track is sidelined and the two are reduced to being mere spectators. Kriti Sanon looks gorgeous and over the years has evolved as far as her performance and choices are concerned.
However, beyond the distinct external appearance, she struggles to internalize the nuances of her dual role as she oscillates between them. Someone as talented as Tanvi Azmi, doesn’t have much to do and Shaheer Sheikh plays a forgettable second fiddle to Kriti. Domestic violence, childhood trauma, anger issues, culture of silence… ‘Do Patti’ touches upon substantial topics but lacks the sensitivity or depth to make flawed seem fascinating.”
