passing through the Aravali hills ‘Desuri’s cord’ The place where this accident happened was in Rajasthan. the bloodiest road Is considered. Ever since this road was built, more than 1000 people have lost their lives in hundreds of accidents. The road, just 8 kilometers long, has 14 dangerous turns.
One of these is Punjab Mod, where the accident occurred on Sunday (December 8). At a short distance from here is Nag Devta Mod, where such a horrific accident took place in 2007 that 89 people were killed. Once again this bloody road is in the news after the incident of death of school children.
After all, why do these dangerous turns remain deadly? What are the defects in the road? Why have these not been improved yet? To know this, Bhaskar team went to the spot and got answers to the questions through experts.
Three children died on the spot when the bus overturned in Desuri Nala.
Where is Desuri’s canal?
The route passes through the Desuri drain in the Aravalli hills between Desuri subdivision of Pali district and Charbhuja area of Rajsamand. It was built in 1952 to connect Pali and Rajsamand. This entire route has Aravali hills on one side and a deep gorge on the other side. One mistake by a driver can be life-threatening.
There are 14 dangerous curves in this route. Of these, 11 ghumavs fall within the limits of Rajsamand and three ghumavs of Pali district. It has been made State Highway 162. But according to the highway rules, instead of 28 feet, the width of the road has been kept only at 18 and at some places 20 feet. The biggest disadvantage of less width is that if the vehicle is at low speed, the driver cannot see the turn. The car falls straight into the ditch.
4 most dangerous turns of Desuri Naal
A large area of Desuri Naal comes under Charbhuja Nath Mandir police station area. Bhanwar Singh, who was a police inspector in this police station for more than 10 years, has reported many accidents. Have closely understood the conditions there and their reasons. Now by forming Desuri Naal Sangharsh Samiti, they are making people aware. Bhanwar Singh said that accidents happen at every turn of the 8 kilometer long road but four of them are the most dangerous.
1. Shani Maharaj Temple Mod : This is an L shaped bend. This is the first turn one comes while entering the ghat section from Rajsamand to Pali. There is a very steep slope here. Accidents happen due to vehicles descending from Rajsamand side.
2. Punjab Mod: This bend is also in L shape at an angle of 90 degrees. Here too the slope is more than 30 degrees. The brakes of vehicles coming from Rajsamand to Pali often fail at this turn or the vehicle does not come under control. If reports are to be believed, there have been more than 500 deaths so far in accidents at this junction.
The three children who died on Sunday were in an accident near Punjab turn. Now, in the name of safety, only stones have been placed on the roadside.
There are a total of 14 curves on this 8 kilometer long highway.
3. Nag Devta Mod : Just at a distance of 1 kilometer from Punjab Mod, there is a temple of Nag Devta. Social worker Ghisulal Sain, resident of Desuri, said that after Punjab turn, Nag Devta Temple turn is the second dangerous turn.
Because there is a deep ditch on one side. In the year 2007, the country’s biggest road accident took place here. The passengers were going to Ramdevra in a truck. The truck went out of control and fell into the ditch. 89 people lost their lives in a single accident. Even after this, many major accidents have occurred. At this point the death toll is more than 150.
4. Butcher Bridge: This is an S shaped sloping culvert. The speed of vehicles coming from Rajsamand increases on the slopes. On the other hand, due to the climb from Pali, the speed is kept fast. In such a situation, many vehicles have become victims of accidents at this turn. Here too, more than 100 people have lost their lives.
Warning board installed at the entry of Desuri drain towards Pali. More accidents occur during rainy days.
Petition has also been filed in the court
Bhanwar Singh said that he has filed a petition in the High Court since 2019 for the improvement of this route. Movements have also been carried out many times. But no solution has been found yet. Social worker Ghisulal said that there is no mobile network on the 8 kilometer stretch. The school bus accident took place around 9:30 on Sunday. But the injured people were not able to contact anyone due to lack of mobile network. In such a situation, a young man traveling in the bus came about one and a half kilometers towards Jheelwada and informed the people about the accident. After which police and relief teams reached the spot.
After the accident on Sunday, makeshift arrangements have been made by placing stones in this manner.
Expert said – Low visibility on L shaped turn, hence accidents
Neha Khullar, a certified road safety auditor from IIT Delhi, has been working on this issue for 12 years. He told that there are two major reasons for road accidents in Desuri drain.
1. Road Engineering : In most of the slopes and hilly areas the road width is less. There is no suitable speed control device in vehicles. Due to this reason the driver is not able to control big vehicles. Along with this, visibility reduces completely at L shaped turns. Due to which many times the driver is not able to control the vehicle on new roads. There is also lack of lighting in hilly areas.
2. Vehicle Engineering : There is an issue of fitness in vehicles involved in road accidents. Which is forgotten. Same thing can happen in Desuri Naal accident also. By filling the buses with more people than their capacity, brakes are not applied. An overloaded vehicle becomes uncontrollable in a sloping area; it is not possible to apply brakes even if you want to do so. The Eye Raid system is being used for the last one and a half years for checking condoms and old vehicles. But even after this, vehicles lacking fitness are also running on the road. Strictness is necessary for them.
Accident reports presented in Assembly
On 23 August 2019, an accident took place in Desuri Naal. 9 people of the same family traveling in the car died in the accident. After this accident, questions were raised regarding this road in the Assembly also. At that time, on 30 September 2019, Rajsamand RTO had presented its report to the Speaker of the Assembly. In the report, there was a need for immediate improvement in the 8 kilometer long road of Desuri. It was also told that accidents here will stop only after improvements are made.
