Sheikh hasina extradition: Mohammad Yunus, the chief advisor to the interim government of Bangladesh, said that Dhaka had sent a formal letter to India demanding extradition of the deserted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. However, he also stated that no official answer was received from New Delhi so far.
In fact, in an interview given to Britain’s ‘Sky News’, Mohammad Yunus said that Hasina will be prosecuted for “crime against humanity”. Let us know that 77 -year -old Sheikh Hasina came to India after protests led by students in Bangladesh last year. She has been living in India since 5 August 2024.
Bangladesh court issued arrest warrant
Bangladesh’s International Crime Tribunal (ICT) has issued an arrest warrant for “crime and genocide against humanity” against Sheikh Hasina and several former cabinet ministers, military and civilian officials. Yunus said, “The lawsuit will not only go against Sheikh Hasina, but also against all those associated with her.”
Request sent to India, but no answer
Yunus said that the Bangladesh government sent a formal letter to India demanding extradition, but has not received any official reply yet. Last year, India confirmed that it had received “Note Verbal” (diplomatic message) from Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi. However, the Government of India did not make any public comment on this.
What is ‘Note Verbal’?
“Note Verbal” is a method of diplomatic communication, which is used by a country to clarify its position or request an action.
Allegations against Sheikh Hasina
The Bangladesh government alleges that Hasina, Army and Police took violent action against protesters in July and August 2024. However, Hasina completely dismissed these allegations and said that she was being tortured politically. Now it has to be seen what the Government of India takes on this extradition request.
