NZ vs ENG Test Gus Atkinson Takes Hat-trick: A three-match Test series is being played between New Zealand and England. England won the first test match by 8 wickets. Now the second test match is being played between the two at the Basin Reserve in Wellington from 6th December. On the second day of this test match, England bowler Gus Atkinson wreaked havoc on New Zealand with his bowling. Atkinson broke the drought of hat-trick in Test cricket after 3 years by taking a hat-trick. With this, he also became the 15th bowler of England to take a hat-trick.
How was the hat-trick accomplished?
On Saturday, 7 December 2024, Gus Atkinson took his first Test hat-trick against New Zealand. Atkinson took a total of 4 wickets for 31 runs in his spell of 8.5 overs. His hat-trick included New Zealand’s Nathan Smith, Matt Henry and former captain Tim Southee. Earlier, he had also sent New Zealand opener Devon Conway to the pavilion for 11 runs.
Gus Atkinson began his hat-trick by dismissing Nathan Smith when a rising ball grazed his gloves and hit the stumps. After this, Matt Henry became the victim of a sharp bouncer and gave an easy catch to Ben Duckett standing in the lane. The third wicket was of Tim Southee, who was clean bowled on a brilliant inswinger.

Atkinson created history, broke the drought of previous hat-trick
This hat-trick of Gus Atkinson is the 50th hat-trick in the history of Test cricket. This includes 47 hat-tricks in men’s Test cricket and 3 hat-tricks in women’s Test cricket. This performance of Atkinson proved to be very important for England and completely destroyed New Zealand’s batting order.
Before Gus Atkinson, the last hat-trick in Test cricket was taken by Keshav Maharaj of South Africa in June 2021. Maharaj had dismissed Kiran Powell, Jason Holder and Joshua da Silva on consecutive balls against West Indies. The last Test hat-trick for England was taken by Moeen Ali at The Oval in July 2017, when he sent South Africa’s Dean Elgar, Kagiso Rabada and Morne Morkel to the pavilion.
