Global Pollution Rankings: According to IQ Air’s latest air quality index ranking, Lahore has been ranked as the most polluted city in the world. Lahore has been kept in dangerous category with 354 AQI. Whereas, Karachi has been placed at 13th position in unhealthy category with 164 AQI. This data shows the poor air quality of Pakistan, which is extremely dangerous for people’s health.
Lahore, home to a population of over 11 million, is grappling with severe air pollution caused by large-scale vehicle emissions, industrial activities and crop burning, reports The Express Tribune.
Respiratory diseases increasing due to smog
Due to the increasing problem of smog, respiratory diseases are also increasing. Recent data shows that more than 1.8 million people have fallen ill due to smog related causes in the last month. Of these, about 1,29,229 people have been admitted to hospital for treatment due to respiratory problems. At the same time, 61,00,153 people are suffering from cardiothoracic problems.
Situation continues to look serious in Karachi
Initiatives are underway to reduce pollution in Karachi, which is called Pakistan’s busiest city and economic hub, but due to heavy traffic, pollution from industrial areas and ports, the city’s AQI has reached 164. Despite initiatives to reduce pollution, the city’s air remains in the ‘very poor’ category.
CAC What did the director say,
Climate Action Center (CAC) Director Yasir Hussain stressed the role of vehicular smoke in increasing air pollution in a press conference at Karachi Press Club. He said, “Vehicular emissions are responsible for 60 percent pollution in Karachi and 80 percent pollution in Lahore. Due to this, serious health problems are being seen in both the cities.
