Pakistan Bans Kite Flying: The legislature of Pakistan’s most populous Punjab province has passed a new law to permanently ban kite flying. Under this law, a provision has been made for strict punishment and heavy fine for kite flyers and kite makers. The move has been taken ahead of the spring festival, when spring is traditionally welcomed through kite flying.
This ban has been imposed in view of the accidents caused by kite flying in Punjab. The incidents of people getting injured by kites while flying kites had increased. It was first banned in Lahore in 2005, when 11 people were injured during kite flying.
Strict punishment and fine in new law
According to the new law, kite flying can result in imprisonment of 3 to 5 years and a fine of up to 20 lakh Pakistani rupees. The punishment is even harsher for kite and manja manufacturers, which includes imprisonment of up to 7 years and a fine of up to Rs 50 lakh. Let us tell you that kite flying has been a popular tradition in Punjab on the spring festival. People celebrate this festival by flying kites, but due to security concerns the government has banned it.
Legislature’s decision and response
Ruling Pakistan Muslim League party MLA Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman introduced this bill, which was passed with majority. He said that the purpose of this law is to ensure the safety of people and reduce the risks associated with kite flying.
Public reaction important
This decision to impose a permanent ban on kite flying in Punjab is an attempt to strike a balance between safety and tradition. While on one hand this law gives priority to people’s safety, on the other hand it curbs a popular cultural activity. Public feedback on the impact of this law and how it is implemented will be important.
