IND vs AUS, Rohit Sharma: Rohit Sharma may not be playing in the Sydney Test match but he has asked his Indian teammates to ignore the rumors and talk outside and focus on retaining the Border Gavaskar Trophy by winning the fifth and final Test match against Australia. Has appealed.
India are currently trailing 1-2 in the five-match series and will have to win the Sydney Test at any cost to retain the Border Gavaskar Trophy. Meanwhile, there is also speculation about Rohit’s retirement which has made the situation complicated.
Rohit told Star Sports, “It (rumors) does not affect us because we players are made of steel. We have tried our best to strengthen the players. We can’t control some things and we don’t want to worry about them. We don’t want to waste time on this. Let it (leak) happen. We can’t do anything about this. Just concentrate on winning the match and performing your best. This is what we want to do.”
Rohit said, “Everyone wants to come on the field and win the match. We all want to put an end to those (rumors). Tell me, which other team has won the series here twice? We have a golden opportunity. We can’t win the series but we can draw this one.
Rohit, however, admitted that the decision to withdraw from the New Year Test was difficult on a personal level. “Sometimes it is difficult,” he said. I’ve come this far to play. I have not come to sit outside and wait. I want to play and win the match. Ever since I became a part of the Indian dressing room for the first time in 2007, my only aim has been to win matches for the team.
Rohit said that the team is paramount for him and hence he decided to sit out. He said, “Sometimes you have to understand what the team wants from you. What will be the benefit if you put yourself ahead of the team? If you play for yourself, score runs for yourself, what will happen? If you don’t think about the team then you don’t want such players. There are 11 players playing and it is a team. So try to do whatever the team needs.
The Indian captain said, “This is my personal view.” This is the way I have played my cricket. Generally I am like this in life also. It’s not like I’m trying to show anything else. What I am is visible. If anyone doesn’t like it then forgive me. I do what I feel is right, there is nothing to be afraid of.”
Rohit admitted that he will be criticized if any decision goes wrong but said that this does not stop him from deviating from his methods. “Leading a team, you have to accept that you won’t always have good days,” he said. Thoughts and your mentality are the same. Even today, my mindset and thought process is the same as I was captaining 5-6 months ago but sometimes you don’t get favorable results.
Rohit said, “I know that 140 crore people will test us. That’s it. I don’t want to doubt myself. I know what I am doing is right. I don’t want to change my approach regarding captaincy.” He said, ”I could also be wrong. Yesterday if I decided that I should have batted in Sydney but in reality, I should have bowled. It may be wrong but it does not mean that your thinking is wrong.
When Rohit was asked which other player apart from Jasprit Bumrah can lead the Indian team in the future, he said, “It is difficult to tell.” There are many such players but I want them to first understand the importance of cricket, understand the importance of this place. I think they should do that.”
“I am in this position right now,” he said. It is Bumrah. Before us, Virat Kohli and Mahendra Singh Dhoni were from this position. No one has got this position on a platter. No one should get this position like this. Let them work hard. There is a lot of talent among our players.
Rohit said, “Becoming the captain of India is not an easy thing. There is pressure. But it is a great honour. It is a big responsibility considering our history and the way we are playing cricket. Let them earn this position. They will get the opportunity to do so.”
