The Hindu community has demanded action against the accused teacher. Symbolic photo.
In a school in South Africa, the teacher cut a religious thread (kalava) from the hand of a Hindu student. After this, the Hindu community has demanded action against the teacher, describing it as insensitive and irresponsible. According to media reports, the incident took place last week at Drekensburg Secondary School in Quajulu-Natal state.
The South African Hindu Mahasabha (SAHMS) has raised the matter to the education authorities. He says that students are not allowed to wear cultural and religious symbols in the school.
SAHMS said that he is investigating the incident of religious intolerance in the school, but is having a problem, because the student is afraid that if he cooperates in the investigation, he will be harassed further. Sahms president Ashwin Trikamji told the media- the principal of the school told that the student had rings and threads in his hands, but he has not given any reply in writing.
Court order cannot be prevented from obeying religious practices
Trikamji said that a similar case came to light in South Africa a few years ago, when a school had stopped a Hindu student from wearing Nathuni (name -wearing ring). After this, the court, while giving a verdict in favor of a Hindu student, had said that no one can be prevented from following her cultural or religious practices.
The South African Constitution prohibits discrimination on any issue, including religion. The government has established the Human Rights Commission and Cultural, Religious and Language Rights Commission regarding this. Trikamji alleged that the Ministry of Education of South Africa had failed to promote religious and cultural tolerance.

On the other hand, Muji Mahalambi, spokesperson of the Education Department of Quajulu-Natal State, said- Our department always takes care that the constitution is the highest law in our country and if any school violates it, it will not be accepted.
The issue of religious, apartheid and land acquisition in South Africa is considered quite sensitive. South Africa has a population of about 1.5 million Indian origin.
