South Korea’s deposed President Yoon Suk-yeol could not be arrested on Friday. Yol is facing a criminal investigation for imposing martial law in the country on December 3. On Tuesday, Seoul Court had issued an arrest warrant against Yole.
In South Korea, officials of the agency (CIO) formed to investigate the scams of big officials and the police had reached the house of deposed President Yoon Suk Yeol to take him into custody. But about 200 guards engaged in the security of Yol stopped him at the gate itself.
Meanwhile, a crowd of protesters gathered outside Yun’s house and started shouting slogans. There was an uproar for about 6 hours regarding the arrest of the ousted President but the police could not arrest him.
There was a scuffle between the protesters and the police team in Seoul.
Now only 3 days for Yoon’s arrest
The Corruption Investigation Office (CIO), which is probing the martial law case against Yun, said-
Yoon should help the investigating agency in the legal process. Despite keeping in mind the safety of the team present on the ground, he was not arrested today.
Let us tell you that there is a warrant to arrest Yoon till January 6. After this, a new warrant will have to be obtained for his arrest.
Police-CIO team had arrived to arrest along with 150 personnel. Dozens of police buses and several officers were deployed around the residence of the ousted president to arrest Yun. After this, police officers and 20 members of the CIO team proceeded towards Yun’s residence. Seeing the protests increasing, about 150 more police arrived.
Most of these police entered inside the complex, yet they faced opposition from the army and protesters. Let us tell you that even after stepping down from the post of President in South Korea, the responsibility of security of Yoon remains on the army personnel.
Meanwhile, Yoon’s lawyer Yoon Gab Kyun has called the arrest warrant illegal and wrong.
President Yoon had given information about the imposition and removal of martial law in the country through TV.
Why did President Yole need to impose emergency?
There are a total of 300 seats in the Parliament of South Korea. In the elections held earlier this year, the public had given a huge mandate to the opposition party DPK. The ruling People Power got only 108 seats, while the opposition party DPK got 170 seats. Due to being in majority, the opposition DPK was interfering more in the functioning of the presidential government, and they were not able to work according to their agenda.
President Yole won the election in 2022 by a slim margin. After this his popularity started declining. His image was also affected due to his wife being involved in many controversies. At present the popularity of the President is around 17%, which is the lowest among all the Presidents of the country.
To deal with all this, the President imposed martial law. He accused the DPK of sympathizing with North Korea and engaging in anti-national activities.
Why did the emergency end in South Korea in just 6 hours?
After President Yole’s declaration of martial law, the entire opposition reached Parliament within a short time. There should be more than 150 MPs in the Parliament to remove the martial law law. By the time the army arrived to capture Parliament, enough MPs had reached Parliament and proceedings had begun.
However, the army tried to stop the proceedings. Many opposition MPs who were going to vote in the Parliament were detained. The soldiers started breaking the windows of the Parliament to enter, but by the time the soldiers reached inside, 190 out of 300 MPs of the National Assembly voted down the President’s martial law proposal.
According to the Constitution of South Korea, if the majority of MPs in the Parliament demand removal of martial law in the country, then the government will have to accept it. Opposition leaders benefited from this provision of the Constitution and the army had to stop its action.
The army immediately vacated the Parliament and returned. There were helicopters above the Parliament and military tanks deployed on the road, they had to go back.
