This trophy, named after Indian cricket great Sunil Gavaskar and Australian legend Allan Border, took an unexpected turn this time. Allan Border was chosen to hand over the trophy at the closing ceremony of the India and Australia Test series held at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), while Gavaskar was kept away from this special occasion.
According to reports, Cricket Australia had earlier planned that if Australia wins then Allan Border will give the trophy and if India retains the trophy then Sunil Gavaskar will give the trophy. But Gavaskar expressed dissatisfaction with this decision and said that he was ready to give the trophy to Border in a respectful manner, as he was also present on the field.
Sunil Gavaskar told Code Sports, “I would have been very happy if I had attended the presentation. After all, this is the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and it is about India and Australia. I am on the field itself.” He further said, “I don’t think it would have mattered that Australia won. They played better cricket, so they deserved to win. I am an Indian, that’s why I was not given the trophy. I would have been happy if I had played with my good friend Alan Would have given the trophy with the border.”
Let us tell you that Sunil Gavaskar, who is doing commentary for many platforms in Australia, was present on the field during the entire match and presentation ceremony. He was standing just a few meters away from Allan Border, where Border was handing over the trophy to Australian captain Pat Cummins.
Cricket Australia (CA) has not yet issued any public statement on this decision, but there is a possibility of issuing a statement in the coming time. When this series was played in India in 2023, Sunil Gavaskar gave the trophy to Rohit Sharma alone, because Allan Border was not available at that time.
