Why is blackout time important?
If the temperature becomes much higher than normal at the time of blackout, then the chances of crashing the spacecraft also increase. This has happened before. On February 1, 2003, NASA’s spacecraft Columbia was a victim of the accident during this period. As soon as the earth entered the atmosphere, the spacecraft crashed, in which Astronaut Kalpana Chawla of Indian origin fell victim to the accident.
What is communication blackout?
Whenever a spacecraft enters the Earth’s atmosphere from space, its speed is about 28 thousand km per hour. When the capsule passes at this speed, rubs it from the atmosphere. Due to this friction, the temperature of the capsule increases further. During this time, the signal of the spacecraft is broken by mission control. During this time, the agency does not contact the spacecraft. This is called communication blackout.
