Recently, the topic of Champions Trophy 2025 has been in discussions. Since Pakistan is hosting the tournament, since Pakistan was declared the host of the Champions Trophy, there have been various questions on the security arrangements. The BCCI had refused to send his team to the border for security reasons. This is the reason that the Indian team must be playing their matches in Dubai due to the hybrid model. But there is an old history of terrorist attacks in Pakistan. About 16 years ago, such an incident happened, due to which the entire cricket world was shaken.
We are talking about the year 2009 when the Champions Trophy tournament was to be played in September. 6 months before that, the Sri Lankan team went on a Pakistani tour, where it was to play three ODIs and two Test matches. The ODI series was won by Sri Lanka 2–1 and the first Test was left on a draw. Sri Lanka-Pakistan second Test was to be played from 1-5 March in 2009.
Terrorists caused panic
At that time, security officials issued a statement saying that 12 weapons armed terrorists were hiding near Liberty Square. When the Sri Lankan team left for Gaddafi Maidan from the hotel, the terrorists started raining bullets on the team bus. Pakistan Police took back action, but 6 policemen and 2 common citizens lost their lives in this clash. It was told that after 20 minutes the terrorist rockets left the launcher and the grenade.
Sri Lankan team players injured
Sri Lankan’s Thilan Samaravira, Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, Tharanga Paranavitana, Ajanta Mendis, Chaminda Vas and Suranga Lakmal were injured in this attack. Samravira and Paranavitana were immediately admitted to the nearest hospital, while other players were not seriously hurt but there were definitely scratches. After this incident, the Sri Lankan team was called to the ground and taken away from the spot after calling a helicopter and was sent back to Sri Lanka as soon as possible.
