The company had signed a lease for a retail space of 4,000 sq ft at Brandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai in the past. This place is close to Apple’s flagship store located in the city. In the first phase, Tesla is bringing its model Y SUVs, which is imported from the Shanghai factory. Its price in India can be around 48 lakh rupees.
Import duty of 21 lakhs on a car worth Rs 48 lakh
- According to Bloomberg report, five models Y vehicles have already reached Tesla’s showroom in Mumbai from the Shanghai factory in China.
- The price of these trains of Tesla is ₹ 27.7 lakh and they have been imposed import duty of more than ₹ 21 lakhs. That is, the price will be around 48 lakhs.
- This duty is according to the 70% tariff of India, which is imposed on imported vehicles priced less than $ 40,000. It also includes additional charges.
In the first phase, Tesla is bringing its model Y SUVs, which is imported from the Shanghai factory.
India Head resigns, Chinese team is handling operations
Despite the change in its leadership in India in recent times, Tesla seems to be moving forward with its planned rollout. The company’s India Head, Prashant Menon, resigned after nine years of service last month. According to Bloomberg News, Tesla’s China -based team is currently managing India’s operations, and no new successor has been appointed yet.

Customers will also get a chance to test drive here.

The company will sell only imported cars in India right now
However, Tesla has not yet decided to set up its factory in India. Some time ago it was reported that Tesla is considering setting up factory in states like Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Telangana, but currently the company is focusing on selling only imported cars in India.

The market of electric cars in India is still small, in 2023, only 2% of cars were electric. But the government targets that 30% new cars should be electric by 2030.
