
Same Sex Marriage in Thailand: Thailand, the favorite travel destination of Indians, has given legal recognition to gay marriage. A law has also been made in the country regarding this, which has come into effect from today i.e. Thursday (January 23, 2025). With this, Thailand has become the first country in Southeast Asia and the third country in entire Asia to recognize gay marriage. Let us tell you that earlier in Asia, Nepal and Taiwan have recognized gay marriage and now in Thailand also the Marriage Equality Act has got legal recognition.
Gay marriage has come into effect in the country from today and 300 LGBTQ+ couples are expected to get married on the first day of the law’s implementation. People from the LGBTQ+ community will get legal status for same-sex marriage in Thailand from today.
It is noteworthy that in Thailand for almost 20 years the LGBTQ+ community had been demanding legal recognition of gay marriage. Which has now been recognized. Now in Thailand, anyone 18 years of age or older can marry within the same sex.
300 couples will get married in Bangkok today
A grand ceremony has been organized today i.e. Thursday (23 January) in a shopping mall in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, in which about 300 couples will complete their formalities for same-sex marriage. After marriage, couples are given all the rights. Marriage Equality Act was passed by both houses of the Parliament of Thailand. Apart from this, the Parliament of Thailand has also amended the Civil and Commercial Code.
Partners will get all rights under law
The Parliament of Thailand has replaced ‘husband and wife’ with ‘individual and marriage partner’ in the Civil and Commercial Code. By amending the law, LGBTQ+ couples have been given all the rights that are given to husband and wife in a normal marriage. In this, gay couples have been given equal rights in legal, financial and medical fields. Apart from this, the right of joint access to the properties has also been given.
Where is same sex allowed and where is it banned?,
Today, gay marriage is legally recognized in 31 countries of the world including America, Germany, France, Belgium. There are many countries where same sex marriage is completely banned. These include 13 countries of the world including Yemen, Iran, Brunei, Nigeria, Qatar. Even in these countries, there is a provision of punishment for those who marry homosexuals. Death penalty is given for this. At the same time, the Supreme Court of India had refused to give legal recognition to gay marriage.
In these countries, same sex is not a crime, but there is no legal recognition either.
There are some countries in the world where gay marriage is not considered a crime. But it has not even been given legal recognition. These countries include India, China, Russia, Britain and Sri Lanka.
