Thailand has given legal recognition to gay marriage. With this, Thailand has created history by becoming the first country in South-East Asia to recognize same-sex marriage. More than 200 same-sex couples got married in a lavish ceremony held at Siam Paragon Shopping Center in Bangkok on Thursday (January 23, 2025), reports CNN.
This law is a major victory for the LGBTQ+ community, which has been fighting for equal marriage rights for more than a decade. This bill was approved by the Parliament of Thailand in 2024 and was approved by King Maha Vajiralongkorn. This law now gives same-sex couples marriage registration, financial and medical rights as well as adoption and inheritance rights.
Prime Minister called it a ‘historic day’
Thailand’s Prime Minister Pathongtan Shinawatra called it a historic milestone in the direction of equality and inclusion. In a recorded message he said, "This law reflects our awareness of gender diversity in Thai society and our commitment to equal rights and dignity for all."
On this occasion, he praised the struggle of the LGBTQIA+ community and called it the result of collective efforts. While posting on ‘X’ he wrote, "23 January 2025 – Victory Day of Love! This victory is the result of the hard work of every person who fought for gay marriage. Today the rainbow flag (symbol of LGBTQIA+) is flying proudly over Thailand."
The law came into force only in 2024
It is noteworthy that this historic marriage equality law was formally implemented on 24 September 2024. After the approval of this bill, it was published in the Royal Gazette. The purpose of this bill is to eliminate gender discrimination in the society and ensure equal rights for all. This step by Thailand has raised new hopes towards gender equality in the entire region.
