The trade war between the US and Colombia has been averted after the Colombian government allowed the US to land its deported migrants in Colombia. The dispute started on Sunday (January 26, 2025) when Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro stopped two US military planes from landing in Colombia, which were carrying Colombian citizens deported from the US.
Colombia’s Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo said on Sunday that the country’s government has accepted all the conditions of US President Donald Trump to avoid significant tariffs.
In response, the US administration threatened Colombia with sanctions, after which President Petro said that Colombia could impose tariffs on American goods. But the White House later announced that Colombia had agreed to accept deportations without restrictions, including those arriving on US military aircraft.
‘Could have treated migrants better’
The White House presented this agreement as a victory for Trump’s strict immigration policy. White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt said that the US government is happy with this agreement with Colombia and ensured that if Colombia does not abide by this agreement, trade sanctions imposed by the US can be implemented.
Meanwhile, President Petro justified the decision to ban American aircraft from entering Colombia on social media and said that America should treat Colombian migrants better. Petro also said that if needed, he himself is ready to send the presidential plane so that the deportees can be brought from America to Colombia.
Questions raised before the world, Trump increased pressure
Before Colombia’s decision, Trump had reacted strongly against Colombia and said that if Colombia did not accept these planes, the US could impose a twenty-five percent tariff on Colombia’s goods, which could be reduced to fifty percent by next week. Could have been increased. Trump said that this step by Colombia could endanger American security and harm American interests.
However, after this pressure, talks took place between the officials of the two countries and Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo announced that the two countries had resolved the dispute and Colombia would now accept the deportees without any hindrance.
