Rajnath Singh: Defense Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday, while targeting the Congress, said in the Lok Sabha that the Constitution is not the gift of any one party but there has always been an attempt to ‘hijack’ the work of its making by a particular party. While starting the discussion on ’75 years of glorious journey of the Constitution of India’ in the Lok Sabha, the Defense Minister also indirectly targeted the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi. He said that many opposition leaders roam around with a copy of the Constitution in their pockets because they have seen the Constitution kept in their pockets in their families for generations. Singh said that our Constitution is not the contribution of any one party, the Constitution of India is a document made by the people of India, with the ideas of India, in accordance with the values of India.

He claimed that the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is working keeping the values of the Constitution at the center. He said, “It is our duty to work with all our might to ensure that the sanctity of the Constitution is never violated and that this constitutional journey continues uninterrupted.” The Defense Minister also said, ‘ ‘No matter how hard Congress tries, we will never allow the basic character of the Constitution to be changed. You see the history, even during the dark days of the Emergency, we had strongly opposed every attempt to hurt the basic character of the Constitution.

Indirectly targeted at Rahul Gandhi

Without naming anyone, the Deputy Leader of the Lok Sabha said, “There has always been an attempt by a particular party to ‘hijack’ the work of making the Constitution. All these things related to the history of the making of the Constitution in India have been hidden from the people.” He indirectly targeted Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and said, ”Today many opposition leaders roam around with a copy of the Constitution in their pockets. In fact, he has learned this since childhood. He has seen the Constitution kept in his family’s pocket for generations. But BJP respects the Constitution. Our commitment towards the Constitution is completely clear.” Singh claimed that whenever Congress leaders had to choose between power and the Constitution, they always chose power.

He said, “We have never played with the independence and autonomy of any institution. The values of the Constitution are not just a matter of saying or showing for us. The values of the Constitution, the path shown by the Constitution, the principles of the Constitution, will be visible everywhere in our minds, words, deeds. He said that whatever the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has done in the last 10 years, The constitutional amendments made were aimed only at strengthening the constitutional values, social welfare and empowerment of the people.

‘We did not make the Constitution an instrument of political interest’

Rajnath Singh said, “Like Congress, we have never made the Constitution a medium to serve political interests. We have lived the Constitution. Like alert and true soldiers, we have faced the conspiracies against the Constitution. And we have taken great pains to protect it.” He said, ”We abrogated Article 370 so that the integrity of India is ensured. ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Act’ paved the way for social and economic empowerment of women. The 10 percent reservation for the economically weaker section was also inspired by the spirit of social justice.

Taking aim at the Congress, the Defense Minister said that the Congress has not only amended the Constitution in the past, but has also tried to gradually change the Constitution with malicious intent. He said, “When Pandit Jawarlal Nehru was the Prime Minister, the Constitution was changed about 17 times. The Constitution was amended 28 times during Indira Gandhi’s tenure as Prime Minister, 10 times during Rajiv Gandhi’s tenure and 7 times during Manmohan Singh’s tenure.” Singh said, ”You take the first constitutional amendment only. In the year 1950, the wrong policies of the Congress government were being criticized in the press. In such a situation, the then Congress government had banned the RSS’s weekly publication ‘Organiser’ and the magazine ‘Crossroads’ published from Madras.

‘Our Constitution has stood up to corrupt governments’

He alleged, “Today, the Congress party, which is singing the praises of the Constitution, instead of respecting the order of the Supreme Court, by amending the Constitution in 1951 itself, has crushed the freedom of speech and expression of the citizens.” Our Constitution has stood strong even in the face of Emergency and corrupt governments.” He said that during the freedom struggle, many organizations and personalities had expressed their views on the draft of the Constitution. Many such people were not in the Constituent Assembly but they had a major contribution in the making of the Constitution.

Singh said that the thoughts of many great men like Mahamana Madan Mohan Malviya, Lala Lajpat Rai, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Vallabhbhai Patel, Sardar Bhagat Singh and Veer Savarkar strengthened the spirit of our Constitution. He said, “Our inspiration, Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, believed that the Constitution should be the result of collective effort and understanding.” Singh said, “We have always written the Constitution with full devotion to the spirit of Baba Saheb Ambedkar and the Constituent Assembly. Have worked considering this as a guiding principle.

The Defense Minister said that the Constitution outlines harmony, equanimity and prosperity in the society in every way and there is a feeling in it that even a person born in a poor family can become Prime Minister and President. Referring to many programs of Modi government like Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, Jan Arogya Yojana, Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, he said that the government is working for every section of the society as per the spirit of the Constitution.

Rajnath Singh’s response to the demand for caste census

Cornering the opposition on the demand of caste census, he said that if Congress and other opposition parties talk about caste census, then they should also present a blueprint as to what percentage of reservation will be proposed for which caste. He said that if such a blueprint is prepared and seating is allowed, then such a draft can be discussed here. Referring to some incidents of the 1970s, he alleged that when the Congress had to choose between power and the Constitution, it chose power and always kept the Constitution in mind. Referring to the imposition of Emergency in the country in 1975, Singh said, “Even during the dark days of the Emergency, we strongly opposed the attack on the basic character of the Constitution.”

He said emotionally, “I myself have borne the brunt of the Emergency. I remained in jail for 18 months. I was not even given parole for offering funeral pyre to my mother after her death.” In his nearly 55-minute speech, Singh accused former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi of dismissing several elected governments in an unconstitutional manner and said, “Congress has never respected constitutional values and institutions.”
