Tamil nadu hindi controversy: MK Stalin, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and President of the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), has waged a ‘campaign’ against the Center allegedly imposing Hindi by the Center. On Thursday, MK Stalin once again said that the state will not allow this language to ‘impose’. He pledged to protect the Tamils and its culture. Now he has also dragged other local languages in this dispute.
MK on Thursday Stalin said in a letter addressed to party workers, “We will oppose imposing Hindi. Hindi is a mask, Sanskrit is a hidden face. “He wrote in a post on X that UP and Bihar were never only Hindi Heartland. He wrote- “Have you ever thought how many Indian languages have been swallowed by Hindi? Bhojpuri, Maithili, Awadhi, Braj, Bundeli, Garhwali, Kumaoni, Magahi, Marwari, Malvi, Chhattisgarhi, Santhali, Angika, Ho, Kharia, Khartha, Kurmali, Kuruk, Mundari and many more are now having to exist.
This remark of Chief Minister MK Stalin has been severely criticized by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav. On social media, Ashwini Vaishnav has accused Stalin of trying to divide the society. He has also asked Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to clear the Afna stand on this. He wrote that it would be interesting to know what the Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi says on this subject. Because he represents the Hindi speaking constituency.
The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kasam has alleged that the Center is trying to impose Hindi through three-language formulas in the National Education Policy (NEP 2020). However, the central government has denied the allegation. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan accused the Tamil Nadu government of practicing political interests during an event in Varanasi, UP on 15 February.
After this, at the DMK rally in Chennai on February 18, Udayanidhi Stalin said that the Center should not start the Language War. The states who accept Hindi lose their mother tongue. After this, on 25 February, Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin said that we are ready for the language war. Center should not impose Hindi on us.
NEP 2020 (National Education Policy 2020) was approved by the Union Cabinet on 29 July 2020. This policy is made aimed at improving the Indian education system and developing it according to the modern era. The NEP 2020 has promoted the study of 3 languages. Students have been advised to get education in their mother tongue. According to NEP, the third language can also be foreign. Along with this, students have also been given the option to select the second and third languages as per their choice.
No language has been made mandatory in NEP. States and schools have the freedom to decide which 3 languages they want to teach students. Tamil Nadu is opposing NEP. It is alleged that the Center is trying to impose Hindi and Sanskrit through education policy. The Chief Minister has alleged that the Center has planned to abolish languages like Tamil and impose Sanskrit.
