After losing the day-night second Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) against Australia, Indian captain Rohit Sharma said that Jasprit Bumrah is also a human being and cannot always carry the entire bowling burden on his own. Rohit asked other bowlers of the team to raise their level to support Bumrah.
India lost to Australia by 10 wickets in the second test. During this period, Bumrah took four wickets in the first innings of Australia. Rohit said in the press conference after the match, “Jasprit Bumrah cannot take the responsibility alone. You can’t expect him to bowl from both ends. Other bowlers also need to come forward and share the responsibility because there will be days when Bumrah will not get wickets.
Young Harshit Rana gave away 86 runs in 16 overs, but the captain defended the bowler, who has played only two Tests after the big defeat in Adelaide. When asked about this Delhi bowler, Rohit said, “It would not be right to judge Harshit Rana on the basis of one Test match. I don’t think he did anything wrong and it wouldn’t feel good to kick him out for no reason. They (Australia) have a good player (Travis Head) who was successful in putting pressure on him. Rana is a player with strong spirit.
After the Indian bowling was exposed in this match, there is a demand for the return of Mohammed Shami to the team as soon as possible, but Rohit said that the Bengal fast bowler’s knee has swollen again.
He said, “The team’s doors are open for Shami but while playing in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, his knee has again got swollen. We are keeping an eye on him and we don’t want to put any pressure on him to return.
There is pressure on the Indian captain to include Shami in the team but from his body language it seemed that the return of this fast bowling may take time. Rohit seemed to avoid paying much attention to the altercation between Head and fast bowler Mohammad Siraj.
After dismissing Head, Siraj was heard saying something to him. Head later claimed that he told Siraj, ‘bowled well’ but the Indian bowler dismissed his statement as a lie.
Rohit defended Siraj, saying, “There is very little difference between being aggressive and being over-aggressive during the game. As captain it is my job to see that no one crosses this limit. Some words can be exchanged.
Siraj knows what he needs to do for the team and he will do everything required.” Asked further on the matter by the Australian media, Rohit said, “When India and Australia play, such things happen. Are there. My job is not to look at one incident, but to look at the bigger picture.
