Democratic party vision
After the victory, the leader of the Democratic Party and former Industries and Mineral Minister Jens-Frederick Nielson said, “People want change. We want more business for our welfare. We do not immediately want freedom, but will first create a strong foundation for it.” His party will form a coalition government with other opposition parties.
Shock to the ruling coalition
The ruling Inuit Ataqatigiit Party and its ally SIIMut jointly received 36% votes. He got 66.1% votes in the 2021 election, which is clear that his popularity has decreased. Both parties also support independence, but want a slow process.
Trump’s eye on Greenland and America’s pressure
Donald Trump, who became the second US President for the second time in January, said that Greenland is necessary for US security interests, so they want to buy it. Greenland is a Khanij-rich island located in the Arctic region, whose geopolitical importance is continuously increasing. Greenland has a population of 57,000, but rare natural resources here are abundant. Due to melting ice, access to mineral resources has become easier and new shipping routes are developing.
Democratic party turns to Trump
The Democratic Party has been a strict critic of Trump. Party chief Nielsen described Trump’s threat as a threat to Greenland’s political independence. Prior to the election, he said, “We do not want to be a part of America. Greenland is not for sale. We will decide our freedom ourselves.” He criticized Trump that America would give security and prosperity to Greenland. Nielsen said, “I don’t understand how Trump can think that we will be ready for his safety and prosperity schemes.”
America, Russia and China eyes on Greenland
Greenland is strategically important not only for America but also for Russia and China. Russia has intensified military activities in the Arctic region. China has shown interest in investment and development of infrastructure in Greenland.
Greenland’s freedom and relationship with Denmark
Greenland was the first colony of Denmark. In 1953 it was recognized as an autonomous region and became the first Parliament in 1979. However, Denmark still has control over foreign policy, defense and monetary policies. Denmark provides financial assistance of about $ 1 billion to Greenland every year. In 2009, Greenland gained the right to declare complete freedom, but did not implement it for fear of economic instability.
Let us know that a survey conducted in January 2024 showed that most of the citizens of Greenland support freedom. However, there are differences about taking fast decisions or adopting a slow process.
