S jaishankar on tarriff: US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose 500 percent tariffs on countries buying goods from Russia. Regarding Trump’s statement, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said in a press conference at Washington DC on Wednesday (July 2, 2025), “Any work in the US Congress regarding Senator Lindsay Graham’s bill matters to us. If it affects our interest or can affect our interests.”
On the question of ANI about the US threat to impose 500 percent tariff on import of Russian oil, External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar said, “We are in touch with Senator Lindsay Graham. Our concerns on energy, security and our interests have been made aware of them. So when we reach that bridge, we have to cross it.”
What did US MP Lindsay Graham tell?
It has been revealed after Republican Senator Lindsay confirmed that US President Donald Trump has approved a bill, which will impose 500 percent tariffs on countries continuing trade with Russia including India and China. In an interview to ABC News, Lindsay said, “If you are buying goods from Russia and not helping Ukraine, then your products coming to America will cost 500 percent tariff. 70 percent oil from India and China Putin. They keep their war machines operational.”
What will be the effect on India?
After the attack on Russia’s Ukraine in February 2022, India made significant changes in the oil purchase pattern. Due to western and European sanctions, India started buying more oil from Russia. In May, India received 1.96 million barrels of barrels daily from Russia. Due to this change in strategy, Russian oil increased from 1 percent of India’s total crude oil imports to about 40-44 percent in a short time.
